Miller 1.3-L, W-2735 variety, Mailed Bust Right INDE ET LIB type.  With attribution ink on the obverse.  Considered to be Rarity-6 with just 25 specimens known according to the census ranking compiled by specialist (and good friend of the firm) Robert Martin.

In the loooong Connecticut Copper series populated with rare and expensive Draped Bust Left varieties that are extremely hard to distinguish from common coins, this very distinctive issue stands out.

And while this coin is not perfect, with a couple of planchet flaws, the color is a pleasing chocolate brown, the level of detail is impressive and this is likely a condition census level example which resided in the world class Connecticut collections of Mssrs. Frederick B. Taylor and George C. Perkins.

In comparison, the finest known 1.3-L is this piece which sold at Stack’s May, 2005 sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part IX.  And while Mr. Ford’s coin is admittedly nicer than the present specimen, it ought to be, having realized $21,850 in that sale 7 years ago, and then immediately selling again to a specialist on the aftermarket for much more.

Making this well-pedigreed example seem like a pretty good value in our admittedly biased view.

Ex Stack’s-Bowers November 2012 sale of the John "Jack" Royse Collection, lot #6041; earlier Stack’s January 2000 Americana Sale of the George C. Perkins Collection, lot #255; earlier Bowers and Merena’s March 1987 sale of the Frederick B. Taylor Collection, lot #2396.

$7,250
