Miller 1.2-C, W-2720 variety, Muttonhead Redbook type.  Considered to be Rarity-3.

One of the most popular and interesting issues in the loooong Connecticut series for what we believe are 3 compelling reasons:

  1. The distinctive obverse head shape is quite unlike others in the series.
  2. The nickname ‘Muttonhead’, first introduced by Sylvester Crosby in 1875, is memorable and catchy.
  3. The topless depiction of Ms. Liberty on the reverse is downright numismatically scandalous.

Unfortunately, most examples of this type are a bit dark and dull and not especially pleasing.  Making the present example, with nice surfaces and superb golden brown color, that much more desirable. Cool provenance, too.

Ex Stack’s-Bowers November 2019 sale of the Robert Martin Collection, lot #5114; earlier Stack’s September 1988 sale of the Herbert Oechsner Collection, lot #1060.
