Maris 44-d, W-5235 ‘Sleigh Runner’ variety, Small Planchet, Plain Shield Type.  Considered to be Rarity-4.

A tough issue to find in problem-free XF (or finer) condition, with this nice, original medium piece the highest graded example we can recall offering.  Indeed, the condition census of this type put forth in the magnum opus NEW JERSEY STATE COPPERS by Siboni, Howes and Ish tops out at “EF+”.

The authors also identify two die states of this variety, with this being an example of DS2, with the reverse break “from the rim above S, extending through the tops of ARE, and then back to the rim above the final A“.  Though this feature appears bolder and more pronounced on this piece than the example of DS2 illustrated in the book, and in fact more advanced than on any other example we could trace.

Making this a nice example for type, but also an important die state example for the advanced specialist.
