Maris 6-C, W-5040 variety, Pattern Shield type. considered to be Rarity-5-.
An amazing piece which is a highlight of this (or any other) list, this is the finest known and only mint state example of this tough and important NJ type.
This Maris 6 obverse is the only horse paired with the Maris C ‘Pattern Shield’ reverse that is also found found on the extremely rare speculative patterns bearing Immunis Columbia, Confederatio and Washington obverses.
The piece itself is a superb, satiny, original Choice Unc. with much mellowed 231 year-old red remaining and has long been considered CC#1, including in the magnus opus New Jersey State Coppers by Siboni, Howes and Ish.
Superb provenance too!
