Breen-990, W-5795 variety. One of just more than a dozen known, with this specimen generally regarded as 5th finest.

A pleasing, original and well-pedigreed example of one of the storied rarities in the American colonial series.

And the design is among the most interesting of this era, featuring a folk-art style Indian and the legend LIBER NATUS LIBERTATEM DEFENDO (translated as “Born free, I defend freedom”), coupled with the New York state arms on the reverse.

Ex Stack’s December 1983 of the John L. Roper Collection, lot #275; earlier Thomas Elder’s June 1908 sale of the Peter Gschwend Collection, lot #87.
