Maris 50-f, W-5475, one of just three varieties in the New Jersey series with the horse facing left, and very visually distinctive as such.  Considered to be Rarity-4 overall, but more like R-7 in this condition, with just the mint state Garrett specimen distinctly finer, and not more than 4 or 5 at approximately this level.

And this is a thoroughly original chestnut brown piece, with hard, naturally glossy surfaces.

The only flaw to note is a tiny edge clip, as made, which is partly obscured by the PCGS holder, but can be seen at 7 o’clock on the reverse in the plate photograph of this coin in Bowers and Merena’s July 1997 auction, where this coin was offered raw and described as "XF", and "Glossy medium brown, and finer than many specimens that have traded in the numismatic marketplace in recent memory."  This piece sold for the then considerable sum of $5,060 that day (for comparison, in that same session a Choice Uncirculated Continental Dollar brought $13,200, and a Proof Washington Roman Head Cent brought $18,700, a fraction of the values those pieces would command today).

In all, a lovely piece, and an excellent representative of this tough Redbook type.
