Baker 25, Breen 1352 variety. Struck in copper, plain edge.

A very rare and significant item, historically included in the colonial Washingtonia series, but perhaps more at home among the famous and extremely rare federal pattern issues of 1792.

Dark chocolate brown in color, totally original in appearance, and attractive for the assigned grade. The reverse, as is typical for this type, appears 10-15 points sharper than the obverse.

Many of the known examples, including the scant few in high grade, exhibit scratches, rim damage or evidence of heavy handling by non-numismatists. This piece is better than most in this regard, with just a single toned-over scratch at one o’clock on the obverse and a tiny rim ding at high noon. Otherwise there are just a few light scattered marks as one might expect to find on any coin of this era in comparable grade.

In all, an appealing and relatively affordable example of this classic rarity.

Ex Stack’s December, 1979 sale of the Donald Fleischer Collection, lot #600.
