Fuld-3, W-8580 Small Ampersand variety, considered to be rarest of the four 1794 Talbot die marriages at R-6.

At CRO we’ve always had an affinity for coins that have multiple things going for them, such as rarity, condition, color, provenance, old holder, etc., etc.

And we have to say that this one certainly qualifies.

Not only is it a tough variant, it is also a lovely, original coin with choice color, bears perhaps the most famous and desirable provenance in all of numismatics and just happens to be housed in a rare, collectible and infrequently seen PCGS Regency slab used by them, sparingly, from 1992 to 1996.  PCGS’s own data suggests a total of just 350 US coins were ever housed in these slabs, of which a small fraction still survive today.

Ex Bowers May 1996 sale of the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, lot #94.
