Sheldon 78 variety, considered to be Rarity-1.

A really wholesome looking coin, and an exceptionally eye-appealing example for type.

The color is a beautiful, lustrous light chocolate brown and there is significant original mint red – especially on the reverse – which has stubbornly refused to budge in some 212 years.

There is a little bit of planchet roughness, as made, most noticeably at TY of LIBERTY, but it is totally overwhelmed by the overall quality of this piece.

Graded MS62 by EAC standards.

Ex-David Akers October 1997 sale of the John J. Pittman Collection, lot #167; earlier New Netherlands Coin Company, April 1960, lot #1368; earlier Henry Chapman, November 1915.
