Breen-1073, Rulau-E KY2 variety. One of perhaps two dozen known in this metal.

A stunning example of an issue that Sylvester Crosby described as ‘Unsurpassed in beauty and design by any piece of this period’ in his seminal work The Early Coins of America in 1875. That sentiment survives to this day.

Very sharply struck (which is not always the case for this issue), with lovely original surfaces and multi-hued toning on both the obverse and reverse.

There are a few light marks present, which are hardly distracting and which serve to identify this piece as the famous Garrett specimen.

In all, an important example of this beautiful and very rare coin.

Ex Bowers and Ruddy’s November, 1980 sale of the Garrett collection, as noted, lot #1527; earlier in Cogan’s April, 1883 sale of the J. Wiley Aulick Collection.
