Musante GW-70, Baker-166A, Fuld 4-C2, struck in Silver. Unholed. Considered to be Rarity-8.
This is one of what we believe to be two known Washington Funeral Urn Medals in silver that are unholed. 99% of survivors are pierced at 12 o’clock for suspension, but this one is completely intact, totally original and most attractively toned in shades of rich gray and subtle deep blue and gold.
The only other example we could definitively trace was the one offered in Stack’s May 2004 sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part II, lot #177 which earlier appeared in Henry Chapman’s December 1921 sale of the John Story Jenks Collection, lot #5565.
Making this an extremely rare, seldom seen and über-desirable issue.
Ex McCawley-Grellman’s November 1997 C4 Auction, lot #531 where it realized $5,500 (at a time when nice Higley coppers were bringing $12,000); earlier ex New Netherlands June 1967 ’59th Auction’, lot #1085.
