1802 Half Dime Obv 1802 Half Dime Rev

V-1, LM-1 variety. Just 3,060 pieces were struck bearing this date; perhaps a few dozen survive today in all grades combined.

Not only is this the key date in the early Half Dime series, it is one of the greatest rarities and most famous coins in the entire American series. Indeed, the 1802 Half Dime is included among the ‘100 Greatest U.S. Coins’ by authors Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth.

And this is a really pleasing Choice Very Fine example of this issue.

Wholesome and original, with attractive blue-gray color and just a few trivial ancient lines here and there. Note that the lighter lines at 4 o’clock on the reverse are on the holder, not the coin.

As on all genuine examples, this piece exhibits sharp central details on both the obverse and reverse, some weakness along the left obverse and reverse borders, and some slight striking weakness through the clouds below ES.

In all, a quality coin and an important opportunity for the serious collector to acquire a relatively affordable, PCGS graded example of this key date.
