Struck circa 1850-60 by Joseph J. Mickley from a discarded, badly rusted and heavily lapped 1803 obverse die altered to read 1804, and the reverse of an 1820 1¢ to fill unsatisfied demand for the rare, original 1804 Draped Bust 1¢ issue.

And these have remained popular with collectors since the mid 19th century and are still included in the Redbook today.

The piece itself is a superb, stunning, ‘hey-this-should-not-exist’ RB über-gem which is the sole highest graded example of this issue at PCGS.
