An interesting and extremely rare piece pedigreed to Stack’s September, 2009 auction, lot #5527 and described there as follows:

Extremely Fine. 34.4 mm. 9.18 grams, just over half of the statutory weight of a U.S. Mint issued piece.

A struck counterfeit from fairly crude dies.  The obverse stars all come from the same punch, and the letters are likewise from the same set of punches on both sides. The bust of Liberty is crude and ill-shapen.

This is likely from the same workshop as similar 1801-dated and 1805-dated circulating counterfeit $10s and similarly dated counterfeit half dollars; careful study could confirm this readily.

Circulating counterfeit early U.S. gold coins are extremely rare as a class. Most of the known survivors are brass, as gold would inevitably be melted.

This is perhaps the most interesting and exciting circulating counterfeit early eagle we have ever encountered; it is undoubtedly of extraordinary rarity.

This specimen realized $3,450 in that auction.
