Breen-1083 variety, holded for suspension (as are 99% of surviving examples).

A nice golden brass example of this unusual issue, with smooth even wear and none of the roughness and corrosion we normally see on this type.

This pleasing surface quality indicates that this was not one of the couple of dozen of these excavated from a riverbed in Oregon in the 1970s (as most of those were very rough and ungradeable by today’s standards), while the wear pattern evident at the bottom of the obverse and reverse suggests that this piece was suspended on an Indian necklace for a long, long time.

In all, a pleasing example of this type offered at a most affordable price.

Ex Stack’s August 2007 sale of the J.A. Sherman and Roraima Shield Collections, lot #220, where it realized $9,200(!).

$6,200
