Newcomb-2 die variety, considered to be Rarity-2.
This cataloger (Dave W.) has always had a particular fondness for this issue. My first collection when I was a teenager was a date set of Matron Head Large Cents in AU, and I had the hardest time finding a decent 1824.
Dan Holmes, on the other hand, was considerably more successful, acquiring three nice specimens of this die variety for his collection, of which this was by far and away the finest.
Lustrous, with pretty color in shades of medium and chocolate brown and with no serious distractions to note.
When we recently advertised a PCGS AU58 we received several orders of it, so I guess the secret about the scarcity of this date is getting out.
Note that this coin has been verified by CAC.
