J.IP. 14, Pr.43, B.29 variety, struck in Silver. First size, first reverse. Obverse signed FURST F. 75.6mm. Rims 3.6 – 3.9mm thick. 2,329.6 gns.

An amazing artifact and remembrance of early America, and a testament to the troubling relationship between the new nation and the Native American populations.

The medal itself is absolutely beautiful, and very nearly pristine.

Shimmering silvery-gray, with both the obverse and reverse toned in delicate shades of iridescent blue and rose. The fields retain their original brightness and the surfaces are semi-prooflike throughout.

There are a few reverse rim tics and some scattered dings here and there, but they are hardly significant in view of the overall quality of this piece.

One can better appreciate the true nature of the opportunity afforded here by comparing this medal to the typical survivors of this type, which are almost invariably well worn and show significant signs of handling.

In all, this is as fine an example as anyone could ever hope to obtain.

Ex-Stack’s October 2006 sale of the John Ford Collection, Part XVI, Lot #126.
