K-17 variety, listed as the "Carolina Gold, Rutherford, 140g., 20 Carats, August 1, 1834" type on page 346 of the 2007 Redbook. Considered to be Rarity-5.
An interesting piece in many respects, not the least of which is that it is one of just two coins in the entire American series with a specific day date, August 1, 1834. (If you want to know the other day-dated issue email us and we’ll tell you).
August 1, 1834 represents the time of implementation of the Mint Act of June 28, 1834, signifying that Bechtler’s $5 coin matched the fineness and weight of the new federal standard.
This piece is perhaps average for the assigned grade, and is slightly unevenly struck as is sometimes seen on this issue. Still, it is better than many of this issue which have been extensively cleaned or damaged through the years.
As such, it represents a relatively affordable, unimpaired example of this popular coin.
