Very Rare CAL. Above Eagle variety as designated in the Guide Book. Housed in an older green label PCGS holder.

Fresh and lustrous, with a hint of prooflike surface and the appeal of a higher grade. And while the coin itself is lovely, its story is a fascinating piece of American history.

The metal in this very coin was part of the 228 ounces of ‘Gold Rush’ gold sent east by California’s then Military Governor, Col. R.B. Mason. The gold was received at the Philadelphia mint on December 8th, 1848 and subsequently used to strike 1,389 quarter eagles, each with ‘CAL.’ counterstamped on the reverse while the coin was still in the dies.

Destined to be the highlight of a world-class collection of US coinage.
