Newcomb-5 variety, considered to be Rarity-5.

A beautiful gem proof with clear mirrors, lovely chocolate brown color and about 20% of the original mint red remaining, and a piece which flat out blows away most of the like-graded examples we have seen at shows and auctions.

This was also Howard Newcomb’s discovery coin for this variety and the piece he used to prepare his landmark book on the large cents from 1816 to 1857, and was later selected to represent this variety by a looooong list of connoisseur collectors.

Ex Dr. French; to the B. Max Mehl fixed price list of 1929; to John Young, Barney Bluestone sale #89 of September of 1945, lot #989; to Ray Naftzger; to Abe Kosoff sale of April of 1956, lot #440; to Harold Bareford; to Auction’80, lot 1090; to Del Bland; to Robinson S. Brown to December of 1988; to Denis Loring; to Robinson S. Brown, to Dan Holmes.
