Miller NY-189 variety, John K. Curtis.  Struck in Copper.

A neat issue with a colonial era numismatist intently studying coins on the obverse and thus an extremely popular type (sufficiently so that we ourselves use it to represent the Our Coins category on our home page).

But while these are most often seen with the John K. Curtis Jeweler and Numismatist reverse, this one is mated to the less common and really cool steamship S.S. Great Eastern reverse:

Wow.  That is one XL boat.

And this is a stunning gem with electric golden orange color and more mint red than one might expect to find on a piece designated as BN.
