Quite an interesting coin, in that the obverse is fully prooflike while the reverse is brilliant and frosty.

The obverse matches the die diagnostics of the proof die listed in the Breen Encyclopedia of Proof Coins:

  • Slighty low date
  • Slanting file marks through T
  • Left base of 1 over r. edge

As such, the obverse certainly seems to have been struck using the proof die, making this what we would term a ‘one-sided proof’ striking, and the first of its type than we can ever recall seeing.

Just 44 proofs were struck in 1882 and as such this is an interesting opportunity to acquire a reasonable substitute at a fraction of the price of an actual proof.
