Authorized by the Bicentennial of American Independence Act of February 15, 1972 and engraved by Frank Gasparro, this massive 76mm, 1.01 pound medal of 90% gold is the largest gold medal ever struck by the U.S. mint.

These were made to order and individually numbered with an issue price of $4,000 at a time when the melt value was approximately $1,519, resulting in a very limited run of 424 struck of which this piece was #27.

In subsequent years many of those were melted, making this as rare and desirable as it is large and impressive.
