Newman 2-B variety, with King James II’s head directly below the G in the legend – a hallmark for a type which is definitively known only as an original striking and which does not exist as a 19th century restrike.

And while those restrikes can be found in high grade, originals in anything approaching mint state are extremely rare.  Indeed, in nearly 15 years of concerted searching we’ve owned a grand total of two others in this grade and none finer.

Still, this piece is not perfect, with a few old marks and a void in the obverse field.  It is however, totally original, better struck than most and would be very difficult to improve upon.
