Breen-68, W-1060 variety.

One of the popular silver issues in the American colonial series, this is one of the four denominations struck in 1659 to circulate in Maryland.

With the bust of Cecil Calvert, Lord Baltimore, on the obverse surrounded by the Latin legend +CAECILIVS : DNS : TERRAE – MARIAE: & C which translates as ‘Cecil, Lord of Maryland, etc.’.

The reverse shows the family crest dividing the denomination VI, and the legend CRESCITE : ET : MVLTIPLICAMINI meaning ‘Increase and be Multiplied’.

And this is a handsome piece.  Nice silvery gray color with some pretty golden highlights, unusually choice surfaces and a relatively even strike that is not always found on this issue.

In all, a pleasing AU example which would make a nice type coin.
