W-8260, Breen-242, Freidus 3.2-C variety, with the obverse legend VALUE ME AS YOU PLEASE, and reverse J CUT MY WAY THROUGH.

One of the storied coins in the colonial series, and a piece that is perpetually on the want lists of even the most advanced colonial specialists

And this is a charming example, with pleasing color, an especially bold and clear deer (about as sharp as you are likely to find on one of these), offset by some typical peripheral weakness, minor roughness and, unique to this piece, some upper obverse football-shaped depressions.

And while those marks are distracting, they must be viewed in the context of an issue in which most every single coin has some serious problem or other, from holes to graffiti to cuts to scratches to heavy porosity to corrosion to cleaning, burnishing or repairs done to ‘fix’ any or all of the issues noted above.

On balance, this well-pedigreed example has a lot going for it, and would make a fine addition to any serious colonial collection.

Ex Stack’s May 1991 sale of the Richard Picker Collection, lot #92.
