Betts-443 variety, struck in Silver. One of perhaps a dozen known in this metal.
And this is one of the most interesting and dramatic pieces in the Betts series, and one of the most unusual in that it commemorates a loss rather than a victory.
Commissioned by Spain, the obverse shows the portraits of the heroic commanders of Havana’s Morro Castle, Luis de Velasco and Vincenzo Gonzalez, who fought valiantly before succumbing to the superior British forces.
The striking reverse depicts the explosion of the massive powder magazine on the site ending the conflict.
The piece itself is a spectacular Choice AU, with lovely multi-colored toning and exceptional eye appeal, and might well be the prettiest one extant.
