Betts-553 variety, one of 500 originally struck in Bronze.
Issued by the British Royal Society to honor explorer James Cook, discoverer of Hawaii, with his portrait on the obverse surrounded by the legend meaning "James Cook, the most ardent explorer of the Ocean."
The reverse features a personification of Fortune with a legend meaning "Our (associates) leave nothing untried.", and "Under the auspices of George III." in exergue.
The piece itself is the nicest we’ve seen of this type, with superb golden brown color just faded from mint red.
