Breen-186, Hodder 2-B. Thick Planchet variety.
A particularly well struck example of this interesting and popular token (and which is, in fact, my 7 year-old daughter’s favorite colonial coin – though she firmly believes that it pictures a Buffalo).
Nice rich brown color with some very faded mint red in the recesses of the design.
The few high grade Elephant tokens we have seen typically have some planchet fissures or rifts or other surface problems which are altogether absent on this fine specimen. The only flaw, and it is not a signficant one, is a small area of beveling on the rim, almost certainly as made, at 3 o’clock on the obverse.
Perhaps at least equal to any of this variety that have been offered publicly over the last 5 years.
