Middlesex-Spence’s D&H-831a, Plain Edge variety.
With the classic obverse motif of a man hanging from a gibbet surrounded by the legend END OF PAIN, a reference to Thomas Paine, author of the RIGHTS OF MAN and reviled by some for the anti-Monarchial views expressed therein.
The reverse inscription MAY THE KNAVE OF JACOBIN CLUBS NEVER GET A TRICK plays on the double meaning of Knave for a rogue and a Jack in a deck of cards (a reference to the Jacobin Club, a far-left political movement at the time of the French Revolution, though the term came to refer to all supporters of revolutionary opinions).
And this is an extremely popular grade for an extremely popular type.
