A remarkable item, this is one of designer Herman MacNeil’s proposed revisions to the Standing Liberty 25¢ reverse presented to Mint Director Woolley in the spring of 1916.
This original art survives to this day having been discovered in MacNeil’s studio after his death in 1947, finding its way to the collection of Eric Newman, and then eventually on to this CRO list today.
This sketch has been encapsulated by NGC in a currency-style holder:
Notably, this exact sketch is plated in Renaissance of American Coinage 1916-1921 by Roger Burdette, sketch #11, page 41, and in The U.S. Mint and Coinage by Don Taxay, page 350.
