Newcomb-16 variety, 15 Stars type.
An interesting and unusual type we have never offered before, with 15 stars irregularly shoe-horned onto the obverse instead of the standard 13 used on all 1816s, most other 1817s, and all subsequent years. The purpose of this is a mystery, since there were already 19 states by January of 1817, leaving engraver error or possibly engraver whim as the likely explanations.
And this is a lovely Choice AU example housed in what we see as a seriously undergraded PCGS slab. And CAC concurs.
Note that this coin has been verified by CAC with a Gold sticker indicating that it exceeds their standards for this grade level.
