Newcomb-8 variety, considered to be Rarity-1.

Among the most eye-appealing examples of this type we’ve seen, with lustrous steel brown color and fiery, original mint red neatly highlighting the devices on both the obverse and reverse.

This coin is tied for CC#2 in both the Noyes and Bland census lists and thus the finest obtainable specimen (since the CC#1 coin is permanently impounded in the ANS Museum).

Ex Goldberg’s February 2009 sale of the Naftzger Collection, Part II, lot #422; earlier Stack’s June 1984 sale of the Floyd T. Starr collection, lot #363; earlier J.C. Morenthau May 16, 1945, lot #695; earlier Howard R. Newcomb.
