Hodder 2-F, W-12120 variety, with the bold second O over E in PROPRIETORS. Our own census research suggests 30 to 40 of these survive in total, with a number of those in extreeeemely low grade.
And this is one of our favorite issues, with a charming (though inexplicable) elephant on the obverse mated to a reverse offering support for the "LORDS PROPRIETORS", the eight members of the English nobility who originally received a charter from King Charles II to establish the colony of Carolina in 1663.
The present specimen is among the nicest and most problem free examples we’ve ever seen, with sharp detail, lovely, original chocolate brown color and excellent eye appeal.
Note that this coin has been verified by CAC.
Ex Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society; earlier Henry Chapman’s May 1916 sale of the Clarence S. Bement Collection, lot #15.
