Martin 1.1-A.1, W-12650 variety, considered to be Rarity-6+ with perhaps 15 known in total.

The first issue in the Hibernia series and the only one bearing the distinctive and frankly bizarre rock outcropping on the right side of the reverse (and which this author always assumed was added by the engraver in an attempt to cover up some sort of humungous mistake in the legend).

And this is the finest graded by PCGS, and one of the 3 best we’ve ever seen, or know about, with only Ford’s amazing mint state specimen distinctly finer.

While most of these are dark brown, this is a fantastic golden brown with actual mint red lingering in the legends and enough crust in the devices to indicate total originality. 

Just a few minor planchet voids, as made, bear mention, but in all this is as nice and eye-appealing an example as one could hope to obtain. 

And considering that a very dark brown, off-center example in an NGC VF25 slab just realized $16,450 in Heritage’s recent Eric Newman sale, we think this one represents pretty good value at our asking price.
