If we hadn’t seen this coin in person, we might not believe that it exists.

Here we have a 1724-D Louis D’or of the same sort that were recovered from the Le Chameau shipwreck off Nova Scotia.

As seen in the Ford collection, and other important colonial sales of the past 30 years or so, the coins raised from that vessel were uncirculated in some cases, but none were especially choice and all exhibited some unpleasant evidence of 250 years of seawater submersion.

But this one is not like the others.

One of the most beautiful, vibrant, original gold coins we’ve ever seen of any kind. Indeed, if this was a common 20th century American $2.5 Indian, it would be considered exceptional.

As a 282 year-old coin, it is nothing short of amazing.

Stunning golden-orange color with some pretty copper toning near the reverse rim and freshness that must be seen to be believed.

Truly a wonder coin.
