Nelson-6, W-13940 variety, considered to be Rarity-5.
One of the toughest varieties in this series, and this is nothing less than the finest example I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen a lot, since your author used to collect this series and looked far and wide for high grade examples of each Nelson number).
In my experience, most surviving examples of Nelson-6 are dark, corroded, rough, riddled with planchet voids or just plain ugly (or some combination thereof), but this one is a lovely golden brown piece with smooth, hard surfaces, nice natural gloss, just a few tiny voids and very little actual wear. In fact, I’d call this AU for the variety, with intricate die lines visible in the fields, though the typically shallow strike makes this type look more worn than it actually is.
In all, a superb example which would be right at home in a world class set.
