Matthew Boulton revolutionized the manufacture of coins, applying modern techniques to make coins of higher quality and greater uniformity.

His work is collected here in the US through such coins as Myddleton Tokens – considered by many to be the most beautiful coin design in the US colonial series.

This candlestick is made of Birmingham Plate Silver, with the “MB” mark of then silversmith Matthew Boulton, along with the “IF” mark of his business partner, John Fothergill. Other markings on the candlestick (a lion, an anchor, and a “D”) place the date of manufacture of this piece to the ‘magic’ (for collectors of early Americana) 1776-1777 time period.

The piece itself is most impressive in hand, ornate, very well made and in excellent condition, measuring approximately 12 inches in height with a 5 inch base.
