W-1790 variety, Long Worm type (referring to the worm the obverse birds are fighting over, not the snake on the other side of the hedge).
And this is among the finest known of this issue, with a relatively sharp and even strike for the type, choice color, delicate toning and much luster remaining.
The finest of this denomination in Stack’s-Bowers recent sale of the Craige collection was a sharp and even AU50 example of the more common Short Worm type. And while that was a nice coin, it lacked the luster seen here, was netted down for a prominent scratch and realized $49K+ in Baltimore. So we think this one is a pretty decent deal at this level.
