Breen-1201, W-10150 variety, Engrailed Edge.

This is one of the least often seen of the obtainable Washington types, especially in the attractive, high grade seen here.

Indeed, in over 10 years of colonial slabbing, PCGS has conferred a mint state grade to just three examples of any edge type – all as MS62.  And while we had an opportunity to buy each of those, we passed, as none were original in our opinion and one was impaired with a big field scratch.

And for whatever reason, a lot of the examples that do come to market in any grade have similar issues, from spots, to corrosion, to odd color.

But this one is a pleasing, original chocolate brown with relatively choice surfaces interrupted only by a shallow planchet flaw in the central reverse, some die clashing at the upper obverse and myriad spindly die cracks (that ultimately led to the demise of this die and which explain the relative scarcity of this issue).

Note that this coin has been verified by CAC.
