Betts-615, Struck in Silver.

One of the great early American medals (the greatest, in fact, according authors Katherine Jaeger and Q. David Bowers in their "100 Greatest American Tokens and Medals" reference which features a silver Libertas on the cover).

With the classic portrait of Liberty on the obverse, and the reverse legend NON SINE DIIS ANIMOSUS INFANS, Latin for "The Courageous Child was Aided by the Gods", as in the courageous infant America aided by the Goddess Minerva (symbolizing France) in the struggle against England.

And this is a lovely, eye-appealing example which had been off the market for 13 looong years before triumphantly re-appearing at the recent Baltimore Show.

With choice, original blue-gray color, wonderful old toning and the ideal look of an 18th century silver piece.

Just a touch of cabinet friction on the high points and an ancient and not-too-obtrusive mark on the cheek explain the 62 grade, but this example dramatically exceeds the couple of others we’ve seen in similar holders.

Note that this coin has been verified by CAC.
