Hodder 2-F, W-12120 variety, with the bold second O over E in PROPRIETORS.  Our own census research suggests 30 to 40 of these survive in total, with a number of those in extreeeemely low grade.

And this is one of our favorite issues, with a charming (though inexplicable) elephant on the obverse mated to a reverse offering support for the "LORDS PROPRIETORS", the eight members of the English nobility who originally received a charter from King Charles II to establish the colony of Carolina in 1663.

The piece itself exhibits some typical striking weakness in the central reverse, but the color is a nice, original medium brown, the planchet is about as problem free as this type ever comes and the overall eye appeal is very nice for this challenging issue.

Ex Stack’s October 1989 sale of the Gilbert Steinberg Collection (as noted on the PCGS slab label), lot #49.
